More Proof, You CAN Create Buzz and a Marketing Virus

Posted by Mike Filsaime December 31, 2007 2:57 am

Today I came across a BRILLIANT campaign from Burger King where they tell their customers that they no longer sell the whopper. (Those of you in Australia know this as Hungry Jacks.)

They filmed their customers literally FREAKING OUT and you are then told to see how they freak out at WHOPPERFREAKOUT.com

They even give you embed code to place on your site. I am placing the video below.

I recently did a presentation talking about that fact that you CAN manufacture BUZZ and then when combined with keys to viral marketing, it can explode over the Internet in just days. They use a great catalyst with the television spots. Then along with humor and controversy, the buzz is created. Two very important factors in creating Buzz. And then, they leave you hanging for more, so you must go to the site.

After seeing the full video, you are then given a choice to embed the video and send an email about the site to a friend. (Which I did.)

Anyways, here is the video below, or you can visit the site yourself to see it all in action.

Thanks,

Mike Filsaime

I’m reall just learning about marketing and online marketing but…That actually gave me goosebumps. In the closing comments I got all shivery as I came to realize what an incredibly powerful campaign that is. Did you see the customer satisfaction when the King came out with their burger? Oh my god. Any business would kill to have that kind of testimonial spreading around the net. That was brilliant.

    Thank you Mike

    Haha, what a great idea!

This is pure genius, and the people really looked disappointed and sad that the whopper was gone.

This is an excellent example of buzz marketing. Thanks Mike!

I love it! Ain’t America great. A couple of those customers ( I don’t think I need to point them out ) were so stoned , they could have given them a Krystal burger and they wouldn’t have even noticed!

    Hi Mike,

I just wanted to say thank you for your amazing and incredible speech and story you shared with me at Strategic Profits. That few moments have been a turning point in my life, and it has helped me take my business to the next level.

I also love the viral marketing campaigns of the Whooper Freakout and the subsequent videos made by the public to top the originals. It’s very fascinating how these videos spread, like an epidemic to infect the world.

I look forward to hearing more on your business updates and your thoughts.

    Best,

    Andrew

This was a great marketing campaign.

It was very original and funny.

I didnt like the part where they displayed other burgers from Mcdonalds and Wendy’s.

    That wasnt cool.

Heheheh – that’s priceless. I would have been pissed off as a customer too. Especially if they’d given me a Wendy’s burger – LOL.

Incidentally, at the end of the video I got a popup that had this error in it from Flash:

I AM WITH BRAD ON THIS ONE!!! I HATE SPAM!!! IT IS ILLEGAL and a $5,000 fine per email and YOU DO NOT HAVE THE “TAKE ME OFF YOUR CALLING LIST” FEATURE WHICH IS REQUIRED BY LAW. STOP THIS PLEASE, i’ve had enough spam for one day.

Mike, I’ve been noticing the same commercial too and blogged about
it at my blog. It’s amazing how commercials these days can create
buzz, humor, entertainment while promoting, like indirect marketing
but it has a big effect on consumers… Great post.

I’d be fascinated to know how a company the size of Burger King determine whether a viral campaign is a “success” or not.

I know the “Will It Blend” videos were a success, because the company behind them saw a nice increase in sales.

I wonder what effect these ads will have on Burger King’s sales?

    Hi,
Brilliant is right, I noticed this on TV and I don’t even go to Burger King. Not paying any attention to the TV commercial I was drawn to watch it anyway. Hats off to Burger King, this has stuck in my mind, they have me curious now, I may have to go and try one of these burgers just to see how good they are. Also using “real people” the hidden camera thing, it’s all good.

    Hi Mike,

    Yeah, I saw this commercial.

This was a great promotion and it works. The other day I was driving and I was hungry and I said to myself “man I need to get a whopper”

I’m pretty sure the reason why I had a sudden urge to get a whopper was because of this particular promotion that Burger King has going on.

This is a classic example of what you teach in your Butterfly Marketing course about creating BUZZ! Awesome!
